Storytelling and Self-Education with Hannah Frankman: Season 1 Episode 3

This episode introduces Hannah Frankman, a fellow college opt-out. She’s a photographer, videographer, and writer who also spends time coaching other young people in their educational journeys.

Hannah makes the distinction between two types of education:

  • Externally required
  • Internally desired

She doesn’t believe that “schooling” and “education” are the same thing, and we spend some time discussing the implications of a culture that is conditioned to think they are one and the same.

Waldorf Education:

“Waldorf schools offer a developmentally appropriate, experiential, and academically rigorous approach to education. They integrate the arts in all academic disciplines for children from preschool through twelfth grade to enhance and enrich learning. Waldorf Education aims to inspire life-long learning in all students and to enable them to fully develop their unique capacities.”

Here’s a quick biography of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf schools.

Hannah designed her own curriculum in high school, on top of teaching writing to fellow homeschoolers. This led to her view of a teacher’s role: to facilitate a child’s learning process.

Writing, Art, and Education

We cover the importance of reading the writing of certain time periods rather than simply spending time in history books. Art (including music and literature) reflects culture better than any historian can.

Hannah’s time teaching writing molded her general philosophy of education. She also spent considerable time editing a magazine with 60 writers under her. Storytelling is a key aspect of her life.
